One more reason to visit Albania. Eight European countries will meet in Durrsi, Albania for the Men’s Promotion Cup, which tips off on Monday, May 29th. Andorra, Gibraltar, Malta and Moldova will play in Group A while Albania, Azerbaijan, San Marino and Wales are in Group B.
Andorra have won the Promotion Cup three out of the last four times. For the first time in their history, Albania are organising a FIBA Europe international competition. The Promotion Cup has been a highlight on the calendar for smaller countries since it was first introduced in 1988. “It was created to give small countries a platform to play and it has helped players in a great way,” said FIBA Europe Board Member Antonio Mizzi of Malta. “Players now realise that there is basketball beyond the shores of an island.” This year will mark the last time the competition will be called the Promotion Cup. Following a decision by the FIBA Europe Board this past February, the Promotion Cup will be re-named the European Championship Division C in 2007. Source: FIBA EUROPE |
